This Amazing Girl is Three

2014-11-25 16.27.19

Cora is three! Three!  I can hardly believe that 3 years ago I was being induced and having the easiest labor and birth of all the three I have experienced so far!

One of the weirdest parenting thoughts I have when we are celebrating the kids’ birthdays is the part were one second they are just here. These little beings go from non existence to entering the world in full force. How can something go from not being into being? A living thing. A baby. A physical representation of the future. and hope. and all that stuff.

It is so hard to comprehend that there was a time before Cora. That for 27 years of my life I wandered around this planet NOT knowing Cora. How could there have ever been a life without her? Without her siblings?  It is one of the mysteries of life I suppose, but it also gets me all emotional and weird when I start letting myself go down that path of thoughts. Babies are magic that way.

Cora Elizabeth is our spunky, sassy, plucky, bold princess of a daughter. She is fiery and full of spirit. She is sweet and courageous and fearless. She is everything I ever dreamed of having in a daughter (though it does make parenting her a bit more difficult than expected!). Happy Birthday wild girl!

Happy Weekend

2014-11-04 13.09.18

I’m taking this weekend to get in some “me” time. I have lunch with a friend and a hair appointment on Saturday. And then tea on Sunday to scout a place for a baby shower! I’m looking forward to having some child-free time to spend with friends.

1/ Have you heard of the Gottman Institute? This doctor claims that after observing couple for a relatively short periods of time, he can predict whether the will be happy or not based on their interactions. Couple who respond to each others bids, or attempts to connect will continue to be happy in their relationships.

2/ The most amazing thing I have ever seen on the Internet. You are welcome!

3/ This is really good. And true. And relevant.

4/ I have been so unbelievable tired lately. I am not sure if it is that the party is over or something is just catching up with me, but functioning has become..difficult. I am hoping to get some good rest this weekend. Get to bed early and prioritize sleep.

5/ I need some more soup in my life. None of the pre-made stuff from the store is doing it for me these days. My regulars are italian vegetable, potato + leek and chili. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

These Kids Right Now

It has been a whirlwind few weeks you guys. We are all a little under the weather, but we are trucking through and working towards getting quality rest. Today Bryan was working from home and he looked over at Grey and I sitting on the couch watching a little tv. He commented on how quickly it seems Grey became old enough to just sit and watch tv. And that he can’t really remember what the other kids were like at this age. So I decided I am going to attempt to regularly write posts that list what is going on with the kids right now. Let’s begin!

2014-11-15 12.12.07

1/ henry has been really into shields ever since we decorated that at Cora and Grey’s party. He has been drawing them and cutting them out on his own. He even talked Bryan into using his C&C machine to make one out of wood.

2/ He is really in love with Ninjago. The movies, the legos, the iPad game all seem to draw him in nearly everyday.

3/ His teacher has commented to me on multiple occasions that his fine motor skills are very impressive. He is always cutting out tiny things he has drawn or putting together and pulling apart tiny legos.

4/ Henry is obsessed with his friend Aaron. We talk about him all the time. What his name starts with, what he is doing right now, where is he, can we draw him a picture.

5/ His appetite has been pretty low lately. I weighed him this week and he has lost 1.8 pounds since this summer. He is definitely the sort of kid who is more interested in doing something than eating. It is definitely not something I want to change, but I also don’t like seeing him lose weight.

2014-11-15 12.52.19

1/ Cora loved her party. She is still asking if all her friends are coming over because she loved having everyone here.

2/ This kid is all princess all the time. She got several pairs of princess shoes and princess tiaras at her birthday party and they are in steady rotation around here when she is home. Also, her magic wand and her sparkly purses.

3/ Cora has been a little better about wearing pants. This probably sounds funny, but around the time summer started last year she demanded to only wear dresses. I was fine with it since the weather was nice and we were potty training. Now it is colder and its more sanitary for her to wear pants.  It was quite a struggle but she is better about wearing pants. Usually WITH a dress.

4/ Cora is definitely our story teller. She loves to pretend and get us to participate in her creative play. She loves to act out scenes from Tangled, pretend we are in school and she is the teacher, and be a doctor and give us all check ups. We love it.

5/ Cora has been really into yogurt and whole apples lately. She will almost always say yes to both.

2014-11-15 12.58.36

1/ Grey wakes up between 4 and 5 am almost every day. It is pretty much killing us.

2/ He has gone from taking 2-3 steps at a time to walking across the room in the last week. Go Grey Go!

3/ He is very interested in imitating us right now. He claps, waves and shakes his head when we do. It is truly adorable.

4/ He absolutely hates having his nose wiped, which has been a major issue lately since all the kids are sick and snotty.

5/ He loves bananas, sweet potatoes and apple sauce. He could eat them all day, everyday, forever. He is definitely the best eater of the three kids right now.

What are your plans for this weekend? I have a Stella & Dot party tonight, but the rest of the weekend is wide open. After a week of doctor appointments and a birthday celebration, I am hoping to find sometime to get outside with the whole family. We will see.  Here are somethings I found on the Internet this week that I thought I would share:

1/ Even more fodder for the decision making regarding where to send my kids to school.

2/ Another interesting perspective on the “having it all” debate.

3/ Bryan and I have been involved in some of the more heavy hitting conversations of marriage lately. Why are we here? Where are we going next? How do we get there?  I am lucky to have a marriage where having these conversations is pretty easy. My partner is a willing participant and open to input. And I enjoy being able to set shared goals. But, sometimes, conversations are still difficult because we have to figure out who we are and where we fit in our relationship with each other while also being true to ourselves. So, when I read this, I was taken aback. It felt so real and got me thinking.

4/ I’ve got Christmas on my mind!  I ordered a new tree and I am getting started on the shopping!  These are my favorite gift guides for kids.

5/ Speaking of Christmas, after Week In the Life, I am already getting mentally prepared for this year’s December Daily album. Ali Edwards is selling a kit. I am really tempted to get it, but I already bought this album.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Going Paleo and Starting Boot Camp

2014-07-29 08.35.39

My mom died pretty young (she was 40) and I once asked someone, given that history, at what age I needed to start taking my health seriously. The answer they gave me was 30 so turning 30, for this reason, was kind of a big deal.

In anticipation of this age, I set a few goals. I needed to find a Primary Care Physician ( I have never had one before, only OB/Gyn over the years), establish some sort of regular workout schedule and get my act together with my diet.

I found out about a Boot Camp program from friends. It meets every day, very early in the morning. All I have to do is show up and they tell me what to do. It is a combination of strength training and cardio. I started at the end of June and still (in November) feel like this is one of the best life decisions I have ever made. I haven’t felt this strong or good since prior to having kids.

So far I am really enjoying this workout and how it fits with my schedule. I am out the door early and home at about the same time the kids are waking up and starting their day. And I feel good through out the rest of the day.

I had my first appointment with a new PCP in August. I was told that my health looks good, but I needed to lose weight and get a colonoscopy (because of my family history of colon cancer). The next step in the process was to figure out what I wanted to do for food. Bryan has been pursuing a paleo diet for about a year now and so I figured I would try to incorporate that into my plan.

I focused on being paleo for a few months, but I wasn’t restricting calories or counting anything because I was still nursing frequently. I wasn’t losing weight, but I was feeling better.  When we returned from a trip to Ohio in September, I decided it was time to start taking this part seriously. I got the MyFitessPal app and I have lost 10 pounds in the last month.

I am really pleased with this progress and I am hoping to lose about 20-25 more pounds. I am trying to take my time, be patient with myself and work on fitting these changes into my life in a way that will stick. I am planning to share some of my favorite go-to recipes here soon (paleo and non-paleo both).
